DWtS Season 16 Week 10

Judges Choice:

  • Jacoby & Karina danced the Jive to Shake It (Metro Station)  27
  • Aly & Mark danced the Samba to Hips Don’t Lie (Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean)  28
  • Kellie & Derek danced the Quickstep to Peppy and George (Ludovic Bource) 30
  • Zendaya & Val danced the Samba to Yerbatero (Juanes)  30

Cha Cha Relay to Treasure by Bruno Mars:

  • Jacoby & Karina 2
  • Aly & Mark 3
  • Kellie & Derek 4
  • Zendaya & Val 5

  • Jacoby & Karina danced to Can’t Hold Us (Macklemore & Ryan Lewis)  27
  • Aly & Mark danced to Icarus (Madeon) 30
  • Kellie & Derek danced to Beneath Your Beautiful (Labrinth featuring Emeli Sandé)  30
  • Zendaya & Val danced to Beauty and a Beat (Justin Bieber featuring Nicki Minaj) 30

Favorite Couples:  I like all four of the remaining couples but Kellie & Derek wowed me the most.  Kellie dances so well and the contemporary freestyle was beautiful.  I wondered if dancing contemporary would hurt her as it was part of the lineup this year but the difficulty level and performance level was incredible.  Lots of impressive moves but that thing where Derek was on the floor holding her legs while she leaned forward — WOW.  I also liked the fact that they decided to NOT supersize it with props or extra dancers.

Although props were involved, I also really liked Aly & Mark’s freestyle — it was definitely freestyle and well-performed.

Who’s Gonna Win?:  My guess is Kellie but it could easily be any of the four.  If I ran the world (and I think I should), Kellie would place first, Zendaya second, Aly third, and Jacoby fourth.

DWtS Season 16 Week 9

  • Kellie & Derek danced the Argentine Tango to Para Te (A.P.P.A.R.T.) 30
  • Ingo & Kym danced the Samba to One More Night (Maroon 5)  24
  • Aly & Mark danced the Rumba to When I Was Your Man (Bruno Mars)  30
  • Jacoby & Karina danced the Argentine Tango to Concierto Para Quinteto (Astor Piazolla)  30
  • Zendaya & Val danced the Quickstep to Don’t Give Up (Noisettes)  25
  • Kellie & Derek danced the Flamenco to The Pirate That Should Not Be (Rodrigo y Gabriela)  28
  • Ingo & Kym danced the Charleston to Fat Sam’s Grand Slam (Bugsy Malone)  27
  • Aly & Mark danced Afro Jazz to Azumba (Gregor Salto) 29
  • Jacoby & Karina danced the Lindy Hop to Ding Dong Daddy of the D-Car Line (Cherry Poppin’ Daddies)  29
  • Zendaya & Val danced Hip Hop to Fine China (Chris Brown) 30

Favorite Couples:  Kellie & Derek, Jacoby & Karina.  I love the Argentine Tango and both couples nailed it!  I also liked Aly’s Rumba but to me the choreography didn’t quite match the lyrics.  Zendaya’s Quickstep was quick so I sort of forgive Val for the long intro.

I’m not fond of Flamenco and Derek did most of the work on that dance but what she did, Kellie did well.  Loved Jacoby’s Lindy Hop!

Who’s Going Home?:  Ingo.  He’s an okay dancer but he stands out the least.  Kellie and Zendaya have been strong from the beginning and have only gotten better.  Aly has really grown as a performer as the weeks have gone by.  Jacoby has struggled with his technique from time to time but he can dance, he has flair, and he has one of the most adorable moms to ever take attention away from the judges!

DWtS Season 16 Week 8

For last week’s Dances Music Scores, please click here.  For a solid recap of last week’s show, please click here for Louis Van Amstel and Anna Trebunskaya’s blog.

Thank goodness for Tom Bergeron!  Anyone who’s watched DWtS knows how feisty the judges can get but Len truly looked angry after Carrie Ann and Bruno gushed over Kellie’s trio dance.  Yowza.  Despite his scariness, I hope Kellie feels flattered — I think Len was so hot under the collar because he thought Derek could have choreographed a more technically challenging routine for her.

  • Zendaya & Val danced the Foxtrot to Don’t Worry Be Happy (Bobby McFerrin) 28
  • Sean & Peta danced the Tango to Hot n’ Cold (Katy Perry)  21
  • Jacoby & Karina danced the Viennese Waltz to It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World (James Brown)  27
  • Ingo & Kym danced the Foxtrot to You Make Me Feel So Young (Michael Buble)  24
  • Kellie & Derek danced the Viennese Waltz to Fade Into You (Mazzy Star)  28
  • Aly & Mark danced the Argentine Tango to Reflejo de Luna (El Alacran) 29
  • Zendaya & Val with Gleb danced the Salsa to Dança Molengo (Bonde do Rolê feat. Rizzle Kicks) 30
  • Sean & Peta with Sharna danced Jazz to Magic (B.O.B.)  21
  • Jacoby & Karina with Cheryl danced the Paso Doble to La Virgen de la Macarena (Canadian Brass)  25
  • Ingo & Kym with Lindsay danced the Jive to Dance With Me Tonight (Olly Murs)  24
  • Kellie & Derek with Tristan danced the Paso Doble to Unstoppable (E.S. Posthumus)  27
  • Aly & Mark with Henry danced the Jive to Hit the Road Jack (Ray Charles)  27

Favorite Couples:  Zendaya & Val, Kellie & Derek, Aly & Mark.  I *hate* the song “Don’t Worry Be Happy”.  That said, I loved Zendaya’s playful interpretation of it.  She’s elegant, graceful, and easy to watch.  I LOVED her trio dance  — she was always at the center of the dance and she was moving!

Kellie’s Viennese Waltz was lovely and her Paso was intense!  I loved the routine although I can sort of understand Len’s disappointment.  Kellie is a talented dancer and doesn’t need theatrics — but I LOVED that routine.  And, by the way, Tristan can invite me into his dark domain ANY time.

Aly has really embraced getting into character and I love watching her dance now.  The Argentine Tango is one of my favorite dances and I thought she performed it well.  The Jive is one of my least favorite dances but I enjoyed the jazzy interpretation of that routine.

The Guys:  I love Jacoby’s mom and he’s definitely the strongest of the guys.  Impressive as it is, I’m kind of over the jump so it was nice to see him do an Emmitt Slide through the legs instead.

I thought the judges were too harsh on Sean, last week and this week — he’s definitely had some awkward dances in the past but the last couple of weeks I think he’s been on the same level as Ingo.  I may be a Bachelor-hater but I have to say that I’ve been impressed with how Sean has responded to the judges comments.  Is there something going on behind the scenes?  I don’t get why the judges seem to love Ingo but hate Sean.

Who’s Going Home?:  Sean or Ingo.  Ingo’s behind the scenes footage might hurt him — am I the only one wondering what he said to make Kym angry?

The judges have made it clear that they think Sean should be the next to go and since I think he’s on the same level as Ingo, it kinda makes me want him to stay in the competition another week.  Wonders never cease.

DWtS Season 16 Week 6

  • Zendaya & Val danced the Cha Cha to Do I Do (Stevie Wonder)  29
  • Andy & Sharna danced the Samba to Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours (Stevie Wonder)  18
  • Sean & Peta danced the Samba to I Wish (Stevie Wonder)  21
  • Alexandra & Mark danced the Foxtrot to Isn’t She Lovely (Stevie Wonder)  27
  • Ingo & Kym danced the Tango to Uptight–Everything’s Alright (Stevie Wonder)  24
  • Kellie & Derek danced the Quickstep to Part-Time Lover (Stevie Wonder)  29
  • Victor & Lindsay danced the Rumba to I Just Called to Say I Love You (Stevie Wonder) 18
  • Jacoby & Karina danced the Quickstep to For Once in My Life (Stevie Wonder)  23
  • Team Paso (Zendaya, Jacoby, Ingo & Victor) danced to Higher Ground (Stevie Wonder)  22
  • Team Samba (Kellie, Aly, Andy & Sean) danced to Superstition (Stevie Wonder)  25

Favorite Couples:  Zendaya & Val, Kellie & Derek, Jacoby & Karina, Aly & Mark.  Zendaya and Kellie can pass for pros, at least as far as this non-dancer can tell!  Aly is also quite good.  Jacoby may be pigeon-toed but he has the rhythm and the charisma to sell any routine.

Of the teams, Ingo and Victor have danced the Paso before and Aly, Andy & Sean have danced the Samba, so Team Samba may have had a slight advantage.

Gripes:  Andy is not a strong dancer BUT was it really necessary to say “you need to set your sights higher than Andy”?  Or to comment that even Andy kept time?  Really?

Who’s Going Home?:  Victor, I think.  I know he’s had a rough time of it personally but he barely moved in that Rumba — the judges were surprisingly kind.  If not Victor, then maybe Sean?  I’m not a Bachelor fan, in fact I’m kind of a Bachelor hater, so I may be alone in NOT wanting to see him dance again.  He does try, I’ll give him that, but the judges are right — he has no sense of rhythm.

DWtS Season 16 Week 5

I dropped the ball last week — sorry!  If you’re looking for the dances/music/scores for Week 4, click here.  And for a thorough recap, check Louis Van Amstel’s blog here.

What a great opening number!  The song was Don’t Stop the Party by Pitbull and I believe that Lacey Schwimmer choreographed the routine.  The professional dancers are the real stars of the show and it was great to see so many of my favorites — Chelsie, Anna, Tristan, and yes, Maks.  It was a little surprising to see Maks and Karina dance together but, hey, they are pros!

  • Ingo & Kym, with Tony and Emma, danced the Cha Cha to Lady Marmalade (Labelle) 21
  • Jacoby & Karina, with Maks and Anna, danced the Jive to Long Tall Sally (Little Richard) 26
  • Victor & Lindsay, with Tristan and Emma, danced the Viennese Waltz to Never Tear Us Apart (INXS)  21
  • Alexandra & Mark, with Tony and Witney, danced the Samba to Misery (Maroon 5)  25
  • Sean & Peta, with Tristan and Chelsie, danced the Quickstep to Go Get It (Sepalot feat. Ladi6)  24
  • Kellie & Derek, with Henry and Anna, danced the Foxtrot to It Had to Be You (Ruth Etting)  27
  • D.L. & Cheryl, with Sasha and Chelsie, danced the Tango to Love Letter (Clairy Browne & the Bangin’ Rackettes)  18
  • Zendaya & Val, with Maks and Emma, danced the Argentine Tango to Discombobulate (Hans Zimmer)  29
  • Andy & Sharna, with Sasha and Emma, danced the Paso Doble to The Plaza of Execution (James Horner) 18

Favorite Couples:  Zendaya & Val, Kellie & Derek, Aly & Mark, Jacoby & Karina.  I’ve always loved the Argentine Tango but WOW.  Those spins and lifts, that footwork — gorgeous.  Zendaya held her own and I was impressed that a 16 year-old could perform that routine as intensely as she did.  And Carrie Ann was right — that had to have been hell on the thighs but WOW.  Why no 10 from Len is one of tonight’s mysteries — that performance was exquisite.  Kellie and Aly were also great to watch — Kellie’s always near flawless and Aly’s really coming into her own — loved her comment about Mark, by the way.  “But Mark’s a good girl, too — he’s good at being really sassy.”  Hah.  Jacoby was a little flatfooted but the man can dance and that jump over Karina’s head was spectacular.

Gimmick of the Night:  I wasn’t sure how I felt about Len’s side by side challenge when it was announced but I loved it!  That is a lot of pressure to place on the celebrities but I think it was done at the right point in the season.  I also think there were more benefits to the celebs than drawbacks — I think it was helpful for them to have dancers of their own gender model the moves for them.

Kudos:  Cheryl Burke is an amazing choreographer!  The routine she put together for DL was fantastic — unfortunately, although he’s improved a great deal, he was a bit wooden on the dance floor — as much as I dislike Bruno’s similes, I have to agree that it looked like DL was stomping through the routine rather than dancing.  I was a little worried about Andy Dick on a zipline — I kept having Hugh Jackman flashbacks — but he pulled it off and it was a great entrance.  Unfortunately the seriousness of the Paso really doesn’t suit him but there’s no doubt that he’s giving this competition his best.

Gripes:  Seriously, Carrie Ann, enough with the lifts.  What’s the difference between an unintentional lift and a missed step?  If you’re not going to dock someone an entire point for every time they mess up (and I don’t think you should), you shouldn’t dock them because there’s an unintentional lift.

Who’s Going Home?:  Victor’s been in the bottom two twice now — it’s been a rough week for him and I think it’s about to get rougher unless a lot of viewers empathize with his relationship woes.  He’s better than DL and Andy but he’s not standing out.  DL has three things going for him — Cheryl Burke, viewers’ annoyance with the judges’ rudeness, and DL’s own sense of humor.  Andy’s heartfelt performance last week and his approach to the show in general may keep him in a little longer.

DWtS Season 16 Week 3

Dances/Music/Scores:  All couples danced to the Rockafeller Skank by Fatboy Slim.

  • Aly & Mark danced the  Viennese Waltz to Give Me Love (Ed Sheeran)  23
  • Andy & Sharna danced the Cha Cha to Do You Think I’m Sexy (Rod Stewart) 18
  • Ingo & Kym danced the Paso Doble to Another One Bites the Dust (Queen) 21
  • Lisa & Gleb danced the Viennese Waltz to I Have Nothing (Whitney Houston) 21
  • Kellie & Derek danced the Jive to Footloose 25
  • Victor & Lindsay danced Contemporary to Slow Dancing in a Burning Room (John Mayer) 23
  • D.L. & Cheryl danced the Salsa to Sex Machine (James Brown) 16
  • Jacoby & Karina danced the Rumba to Stay (Rihanna)  24
  • Wynonna & Tony danced the Samba to Pour Some Sugar on Me (Def Leppard) 15
  • Sean & Peta danced the Cha Cha to YMCA (Village People)  21
  • Zendaya & Val danced the Viennese Waltz to Que Sera Sera (Doris Day)  24

Favorite Couples:  Jacoby & Karina were my absolute favorites — that was a gorgeous routine.  I also liked Kellie & Derek’s Jive — Derek’s slide down the staircase was fun but I do wonder why he allowed more than a few beats to pass by before pulling Kellie onto the floor.

Who’s Going Home?:  I would like to see the judges go home.  I was a little slow to hit the mute button so I heard Len tell D.L. that if D.L. was a sex machine, than he (Len) was America’s Top model.  What part of that comment shared something specific for D.L. to focus on improving?  That’s why you get booed, Len.  It was a cruel thing to say and there was nothing constructive about it.  I was still horrified by Len’s comment when Bruno chimed in to say that it looked like D.L. needed a hip replacement.  D.L. may be the weakest dancer but he still deserves comments he can use to improve, not insults.  I hate seeing people go out of their comfort zone, give it their all, and get blasted with vicious comments.  The producers of the show should take this seriously — how can they expect to draw stars to its lineup when they know that this is the type of criticism they might receive?

D.L. might have at least another week to give it his all — the judges’ comments may have rallied voters to his side.  I think Lisa may go home tonight — she’s not standing out from the crowd and I don’t know how strong her fan base is.  Wynonna walked more than danced but I think her fans will pull her through.  It’s too bad that she didn’t show some of the same energy in her Samba as she did in the Group Dance but that was a much shorter routine.

DWtS: Season 16 Week 2

  • Ingo & Kym danced the Quickstep to Billy-a-Dick (Bette Midler) 20
  • Dorothy & Tristan danced the Jive to Chantilly Lace (Big Bopper)  15
  • Jacoby & Karina danced Jazz to Five Guys Named Moe (Louis Jordan)  23
  • Victor & Lindsay danced the Jive to Runaway Baby (Bruno Mars)  18
  • Wynonna & Tony danced the Quickstep to Neutron Dance (Pointer Sisters)  18
  • Zendaya & Val danced the Jive to This Head I Hold (Electric Guest)  26
  • Andy & Sharna danced Jazz to Poker Face (Lady Gaga)  20
  • Sean & Peta danced the Jive to Let’s Get Movin’ Into Action (Skye Sweetnam)  20
  • Alexandra & Mark danced the Quickstep to Jumpin Jack (Big Bad Voodoo Daddy)  24
  • Lisa & Gleb danced the Jive to One Way or Another (One Direction)  18
  • D.L. & Cheryl danced the Quickstep to It Don’t Mean a Thing (Duke Ellington)  16
  • Kellie & Derek danced Jazz to Lights (Ellie Goulding)  26

Favorite Couples: Kellie & Derek, Zendaya & Val, Jacoby & Karina, Ingo & Kym.  Okay, I don’t know Contemporary Jazz but I think Kellie should have gotten at least a 27, if not a 30 — WOW.  If I hadn’t known who she or Derek were, I wouldn’t have known who was the Pro.

Zendaya is easy to watch — she moves very well and keeps up with Val.  I don’t know how strong of a fan base she’ll have but I hope she stays in the competition for a long time.

Jacoby can move!  His posture was much better this week — I think he and Kellie are the celebs to beat.

Who’s Going Home?:  D.L.  Although he improved quite a bit, he’s the least comfortable on the floor AND he cussed at Cheryl in practice.  Not cool, D.L., not cool.  Cheryl’s one of the best choreographers on the show — if anyone could have gotten you relatively far in the competition, it was her.  Victor and Lisa may also be in trouble.  Although Dorothy had a bad night, I think she’ll have at least another week to redeem herself.
