America’s Ballroom Challenge

If you like ballroom dancing, you owe it to yourself to check out this competition. The dialogue between the hosts may sound stilted but the dancing is impeccable–and that’s what we’re watching for anyway, right? The season premiered last night with the American Smooth competition–wow–I really need to figure out how to record with my DVR. (I’ll read anything except an instruction manual–my eyes glaze over every single time I try) The dances of the night were Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot and Viennese Waltz.

.
The set-up is different from Dancing with the Stars. Each competition begins with a group dance–this is where being able to watch the program again would be fantastic–try as I might, I can’t watch everyone at once and they are all extremely good. Each couple then has the floor to themselves for a “show dance”–if you watch Dancing With the Stars, think “free-style”. The show dances this evening ranged from classic mingling of American Smooth styles to DWS style free-styles. Mayo Alanen and Lisa Vogel performed a portion of their show dance to “Gangsta’s Paradise”–I thought it was edgy and fun but I’m not sure the judges agreed . . . .

What I like best about America’s Ballroom Challenge is that the focus of the show is truly dancing–and exceptional dancing at that. Next week the focus is American Rhythm style–Cha Cha, Rumba, Swing, Bolero, Mambo. If I’ve piqued your interest, tune in your tv to PBS, Wednesday evening, 8 p.m. For more information on the dances & dancers, visit http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/ballroomchallenge/index.html
