The “Time of Hiding” ended a few years ago for the lesser fae—you know, garden sprites, brownies, selkies, wood sprites and pixies. Werewolves, vampires and witches are still maintaining secrecy although there are rumors that the werewolves are planning to come out next—despite the fact that the lesser fae have found themselves confined to reservations now that their nature is known.
Mercy Thompson is a shapeshifter, although the vampires refer to her as a walker. There aren’t many walkers left in the world—she’s never met another. She’s okay with that though—she accepted her unique status long ago. Things have been going fairly well for Mercy—she runs her own business, a garage she bought from a kind old gremlin. She’s repairing a van for one of the local undead and in return, he protects her from his fellow vampires. Then Mac shows up. He looks like a runaway and he smells like a werewolf—a recently-made werewolf. Mercy offers him a job and considers how best to introduce him to Adam, the local werewolf leader. Before introductions can be made however, Mac is attacked and Mercy has to call Adam to inform him that she has killed a werewolf in his territory.
Loved this book! While similar to Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse series, Mercy Thompson’s universe is quite clearly hers. *I love the fact that Stefan, a ‘decent guy for a vampire’, has painted his van to look like the Mystery Machine from the Scooby Doo cartoons.

- Ty & Chelsie did the Paso Doble to Barracuda (Heart) 21
- Lil’ Kim & Derek did the Viennese Waltz to I’ll Be (McCain) 26
Favorite Couples: Gilles & Cheryl, Melissa & Tony, Shawn & Mark. *Still rooting for Ty & Chelsie . . .
Who’s Going Home: Steve-O? anyone but my favorites, please!
Other Thoughts: Samantha Harris asking Chuck if the bended knee was leading to an announcement—awkward and unnecessary. Loved Melissa & Tony’s Paso—although not as much as Gilles & Cheryl’s. Poor Ty—the pace of his Paso was too slow for Barracuda. Is there a spark of romance between Steve-O & Lacey? I still don’t like him—but I don’t dislike him as much as I did at first.

Big Questions of the Night: Why does Eloise Hawkins (Ellie?) now think it’s okay to do what they can with only 2 of the Oceanic 6? They still have time—shouldn’t she be convincing Jack and Sun to go back and get the others? Is Jack the most essential of the group? What’s the deal with the Smoke Monster? Are there two forces at work on the island? Who is Jacob?
Eloise Hawking. Eloise is probably the Ellie who was part of the Others back in Widmore’s time. After insisting that all 6 plus John were needed for the trip back to the island, she seemed overly quick to accept that she only had Jack and Sun. Does she think a failed attempt will prompt them to go back and get their friends? Does she think putting them in some sort of time-travel coma will force their friends to act? Is Jack the only one who absolutely has to go back? Or, is Eloise aligned with Widmore instead of Ben? Were she and Widmore evicted from the island at the same time? (It seems clear that Eloise is Daniel’s mom—and Widmore funded Daniel’s research . . . )
Jack. If Lost writers take the time to create a detail about a character, it’s likely to have several implications. Jack’s tattoos represent “he who walks among us but is not one of us”—and the story of how he received the tattoos is somewhat mystical. Locke knows other people want to leave the island but it seems to be Jack that he’s most determined to stop—is this determination because Locke is attuned to the Island’s wishes and ‘knows’ that Jack needs to stay? And finally, Jacob appears to Locke in the guise of Christian Shephard and tells him to ’say hello to my son’.
Smoke Monster. The smoke monster sounds like chains being unwound from a reel but of course it’s smoky and it has amazing speed/reach—is it tied to a chain somehow? Does it serve two purposes? One to show those with potential ‘the way’—the other, of course, to destroy? It killed Nadine immediately and only grabbed another of her crew to drag into its lair. Everyone except Danielle followed and they later emerged, looking okay but behaving abnormally.
Two forces. Some ‘manifestations’ seem to want the 6 to come back, some do not. Are there two forces? Lost writers do seem to like duality. If there are two ‘forces’, how do Ben and Widmore relate to them?
Jacob. Is Jacob assuming the guise of Christian Shephard because ‘he’ regards Jack as his true heir? Christian was the first manifestation any of the Losties saw—and it was Jack who saw him.
Other Questions of the Night: Will the Losties finally meet the original inhabitants of the island? Sawyer and crew are now in a pre-well time . . .
An older question but one that still bothers me: Why does Locke assume that the time-jumps are because Jack’s group left—why wouldn’t he assume it was because Ben ‘moved’ the island?
Concerns: Desmond is in LA—Penny came with him. Ben is in LA. Ben blames Widmore for Alex’s death and has threatened to kill Penny in revenge.
