Yes!!! Neal is Baelfire! That said, I was letdown by his reunion with Emma — were my expectations too high? Their initial reactions to each other were excellent, but I wanted him to try to convince her that August’s plan was a good one and that he did everything he did was because he loved her, etc. Emma’s reaction to him was convincing but I expected more from Neal.
I was sold on Bae’s scenes with Rumpel but I have one question — does Bae normally take off running every time someone rings his buzzer? Has he been expecting Rumpel or is he still a criminal? And Rumpel!!! You’re a smart man and should know that Bae hates everything magic-related — that’s how he ended up in our world, after all. And, even if Bae had a change of heart and decided that magic was okay, he’s not likely to want to his memory erased or to want to be 14 again. Dude. There are times I’ve loved Rumpel and times I’ve hated Rumpel, but last night was the first time I said “What. An. Idiot.” And, as annoying as Henry can be, Rumpel better reconsider his plans for the boy that will be his undoing! Think about it Rumpel — Bae wants nothing to do with you but he might just come to Storybrooke now that he knows he has a son. You give up magic because you finally realize that’s the only way to rebuild a relationship with Bae. No more all-powerful Dark One BUT you could be the father you were before. And even if I’m wrong, doing anything bad to Henry will guarantee that Bae is lost to you forever.
Backing up a bit, I did find Rumpel’s backstory interesting. His dad was a coward who abandoned him as a child and Rumpel desperately wants to prove that he’s not that kind of guy. He signs up for the Ogre Wars but meets a Seer who messes with his head (and gave me nightmares). I understand why he wanted to get out of the Ogre Wars — what I don’t understand is why he didn’t try to make it look like an accident. I’m also confused by the time frame — I know travel’s a bit slow in FairyTale land but several months apparently passed between the time he left and returned. Okay, he was probably delayed while he healed, and then his reputation as a coward probably made it tough to catch a ride with anyone. And Milah may have been a few months along before he left. Yeah, that works.
Back to current-day Rumpel — when did Rumpel forget how to count? I thought his favor was that Emma had to help him find his son — she did but then, she had to catch him. Once he realized that she’d let Bae go, Rumpel informed her that the favor was really that she had to make Bae talk to him. For someone who’s all about details, it seems like those would be three separate favors. And why, why, why did he leave a map to his magical dagger? Despite a successful test of Storybrooke’s border, was he still afraid that he’d lose his memory? And if that happened, did he believe that the dagger would help him regain it? Belle would of course retrieve it for that purpose and I have no doubt that she could figure out the map — but it may have made more sense to just give it to her rather than leave it where a library patron could find it. Okay, the library’s probably still closed BUT people break into it ALL OF THE TIME.
Which brings us to Regina, Cora and Hook. I know Regina’s always wanted her mother’s love and I get that to a point BUT CORA RIPPED OUT DANIEL’S HEART. And hasn’t apologized for that, by the way, not that an apology could suffice for RIPPING OUT A PERSON’S HEART. I also get that Regina wants Henry back but does she really think he’ll hold her blameless even if it’s Rumpel who kills Snow, Charming, and Emma? And, even if she thought she was in the clear, shouldn’t she care that this will devastate him? Some days, it’s just impossible to be a Regina-sympathizer. As if all of that weren’t enough, apparently Regina didn’t get the memo that there’s a stranger in the hospital so she feels free to play with the magic that she’d promised Henry she’d stop using. Bleh. I know I should be more worried about the Greg storyline but with people planting giant beanstalks, I’m just not.
Raiding Regina’s closet and visiting Regina’s hairdresser suits Cora — I still hate her but she looks good. Hook — eh. Still rockin’ the guy-liner but whiney is not sexy.
Henry — aargh. He’s just a kid, and he was raised by the Evil Queen so I should probably cut him some slack. I loved his scenes with Rumpel but hated him telling Emma she was just like Regina.
Questions Answered — sort of: We finally know what August showed Bae — a typewritten page that says “I know you’re Baelfire.” Um, why not just say that aloud? I expected something bigger, more magical. And how did he know that Neal was Bae???
