Thoughts on Lost (Part 3)

The Oceanic 6 so far: Jack, Kate, Aaron, Hurley and Sayid. My guess for the remaining Oceanic ’survivor’ is Sun—she’s pregnant and because she conceived on the island, her and her baby’s lives are believed to be at risk if she stays. Of the other likely candidates, it appears that something has happened to Claire by the time the others leave the island, Sawyer doesn’t seem interested, Jin would give his spot to Sun and Locke of course doesn’t want to go. Now if the writers really wanted to throw us all into a tizzy, they’d make Locke the remaining survivor and have us all wondering how that came to pass . . . .

My guess for Ben’s ‘man’ on the boat is Michael—I’m also guessing that Michael is the captain of the boat. I have to confess, Michael wasn’t my first choice—but then I re-watched last week’s episode—when Locke asks Ben for the name of the man on the boat, Ben suggests that he sit down—which seems to imply that it’s someone Locke knows. I have to admit, I was originally thinking that we’d find Michael and Walt somewhere else on the island–particularly since Walt has made a few random appearances since their supposed departure.  I never really expected that Ben would let them make it far.

I really dislike Locke at the moment. He’s always been ‘holier than thou’ and he’s always been somewhat secretive—but he’s become a tyrant this season. Maybe he does have keener insight than the others, maybe not. Even assuming he does, I resent the fact that he has placed himself completely in charge—he alone controls the information, he alone makes the rules and he alone determines the consequences. It seems that he believes he has Divine Right—I’m thinking hubris always leads to a fall—at least in greek mythology anyway.  Actually, maybe Sawyer will get so annoyed with him that he’ll knock him out and put him on the helicopter just for spite. . . that would give us our twist!

One last rant about Locke—it’s particularly galling to me that he considers himself so much smarter than everyone else and yet Ben still manipulates him quite easily. Actually I think he and Ben are more alike than different . . . Ben’s just had more practice.

Back to Season 1—I’ve now finished disk 5. In addition to keeping us on our toes with layers of mystery, Lost also has its funny moments. There’s the scene when Hurley steps on a sea urchin (?)—he tries to communicate to Jin that he wants him to pee on the wound. Another great scene is when Charlie realizes that Aaron likes the sound of Sawyer’s voice—he basically chases Sawyer down the beach until Sawyer relents and starts reading to Aaron.

In Season 1, both Sayid and Sawyer hear the whispers—I don’t think they’ve ever been explained. **I almost forgot—the “box” is mentioned for the first time in Season 1. Hurley tells Leonard that he used the numbers to win the lottery—Leonard freaks out and tells him that he’s opened the box. What’s the deal with the numbers anyway?

I love the “Ben’s just had more practice” comment. Interesting perspective. I enjoyed your rant on Locke. He has become an irrational bully. I agree that Michael is the spy on the boat and that Sun gets off the island. I still think there is another of the “Six”, due to Aaron being born on the island.

Did you hear there is a funeral in tomorrow’s episode? I’m curious if it’s the funeral from the finale last year? Maybe?

Hurley is great! He always makes me laugh. I did not realize that the box was mentioned in Season 1. Do you think it’s Ben’s box? The one he mentioned to Locke last season.

I haven’t caught any previews yet—hmmm. Who’s your guess for another survivor?

I’m thinking that the Season 1 box and Ben’s box are the same.

Looking forward to more questions answered—and raised—in tonight’s episode!
